1956 was only the second year of production for the Les Paul Special. This instrument is in the classic “TV Yellow,” a color designed to stand out on B&W TV. Guitar was recently examined for authenticity by George Gruhn of Gruhn Guitars in Nashville Tn, the world’s foremost vintage stringed instrument dealer, “This is a 1956 Les Paul Special in TV yellow. It is all original as far as I can tell. It has a few minor dings on the front, back, and edge. Only a couple go through the finish. Serial number 614584. Upon inspection we note that this guitar exhibits typical finish deterioration with lacquer checking, compression marks, chips and edge wear. The original Klauson tuners have been replaced with modern reproduction units. In other respects, this instrument conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made: mahogany single cut away slab body, TV yellow finish, multi-ply beveled edged black pick guard, two single coil black plastic covered “soap bar” P-90 pickups, black bonnet shaped control knobs, wrap-around bridge-tailpiece, mahogany neck, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, pearloid dot fingerboard inlays, single ply white fingerboard binding, classic “open book” peghead shape, mother-of -pearl Gibson logo, and gold silk-screened,”Les Paul Special” on the peghead, nickel-plated metal hardware, and other Les Paul Special appointments.” A treasured classic by many famous guitarists, the Les Paul Special has been one of the guitars of choice of several renowned artists including John Lennon, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton and Martin Barre.
